How to be successful

By Dr Becky Spelman

successWhether it be in our careers or relationships, one thing that we are all constantly striving for is success. Being successful means different things to different people, but there are a few common characteristics that we all associate with the word – including money and happiness.

So, how can we go about getting the elusive and often difficult to achieve success that we dream of? Read on to find out.

Stop fearing failure

Fear is debilitating and for many of us it is the one thing that is holding us back from being truly successful. Think about how many decisions you make every day. Now consider how many of the choices that you make are influenced by feelings of fear. No, I won’t apply for that job because there is no way that I will get the position. I can’t ask him or her out on a date, they are way out of my league and will definitely say no. Do you see how fear will hold you back from doing things that will elicit success? Successful people still have fears, but they learn to overlook them and instead keep in mind what they really want to achieve.

Don’t make excuses

If you keep missing your goals and not achieving the things that you want to, it’s time to be really honest about why that is and how you can make a change in order to see the results that you want to. Look at the last goal you were working towards and ask yourself why you didn’t quite get there. Instead of instantly saying it’s because it was too hard, think about what you could have done differently to make it easier. The sooner you stop making excuses for yourself, the sooner you will get the results that you really deserve. Remember to remain consistent as well. Working hard for a few weeks and then slacking off won’t get you where you want to be, so remain goal-orientated at all times.

Keep things balanced

When it comes to success, it’s no good having a thriving career that is going from strength to strength if your relationship with your family is falling apart. Success needs to be about the whole picture, so try and put energy into all areas of your life and don’t neglect anyone in the process.
