Professor Ahmed Hankir
MBChB, MRCPsych · Lead Consultant Psychiatrist, Private Therapy Clinic · Honorary Visiting Professor, Cardiff University School of Medicine · WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health and Human Rights
A consultant psychiatrist who was once the patient, and who can hold a room of 500 people while teaching them something clinically true.
Professor Hankir treats adults across the full spectrum of mental health conditions, and trains doctors, students and health systems worldwide in how to talk about mental illness without shame. His signature programme, The Wounded Healer, blends storytelling with psychiatric education, drawing on his own recovery from a severe episode of psychological distress during medical school.
He advises the World Health Organization on QualityRights, its human-rights-based approach to mental health, and has delivered WHO training in Ukraine and Indonesia. He facilitated the global launch of the WHO's Mental Health Policy Guidance alongside Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
For a workplace audience, that combination is unusual: a clinician who can give managers an accurate picture of what mental illness actually is, and a speaker who can make 500 people put their phones down.
