What is the best treatment for Depression

How Can Depression be Treated?

Depression is a common mental and emotional health issue that damages the well-being of countless people all over the world. It can have a devastating impact on our relationships with the people we love, our ability to work, and our capacity to plan for the future.

Because depression is such a serious condition, it deserves to be taken seriously. For some patients, medication can form part of a treatment plan that will make it much easier for them to have a fulfilling life. However, it is a mistake to turn to medication as a first port of call. Many patients with depression find that therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy help them to manage their condition effectively.

There are different forms of depression. While some people have chronic depression and can potentially suffer a relapse at any time, others may experience depression in reaction to certain features of their lives. The death of a loved one, becoming a parent for the first time, or experiencing high levels of stress can all lead to depression that goes far beyond the initial grief or concern associated with these phases of life.

When someone has depression they, and the people who care for them, can feel quite frantic and urgent about finding a “cure” for the condition, and it can be tempting to go to a GP or prescribing psychologist and ask for mood-enhancing medication. The problem is that, while the medication can help in the short term, it does nothing to address the factors that underlie the depression. If your depression is related to stressors in your life (perhaps you are caring for an aged relative, dealing with an ongoing difficult situation at work, or something else), the medication will do nothing to address these issues. Instead, you need to find a way to respond to them in a manner that helps you to avoid the darkness and strain of depression. If you have chronic depression, medication will not help you to learn the techniques and methods that make it possible for you to manage it more effectively. In either case, even if the medication helps in the short term, when you stop taking it, all the things that contribute to your depression will still be there.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy does not call for delving into your remote childhood or examining the origins of your depression. Rather, it helps you to learn how to identify what triggers your condition, and how to control and manage it more effectively. Over time, you will come to understand yourself and your condition better, and to acquire methods that you can put to use whenever you feel yourself to be at risk of experiencing a bout of depression.
