About TF-CBT in Treating Trauma and Related Disorders
Many people will suffer trauma over the course of their lives. Learning how to recover from trauma can help to build resilience, but when someone experiences a severe trauma, the effects can be long-lasting. With the right support, however, people with trauma and related conditions can learn how to manage them effectively and dramatically improve their quality of life.
TF-CBT has a proven track record when it comes to managing trauma effectively and reducing symptoms over time. It can work for patients who have recently experienced trauma, or those who have been dealing with its after-effects for years. Moreover, patients who engage with TF-CBT typically see tangible improvements in a relatively short timeframe.
Therapists using TF-CBT provide a safe environment in which their patients can work on acquiring the skills and understanding they need to manage their trauma-related problems effectively. They become optimistic and positive about the future, while acquiring practical skills that help them to minimise the impact that their symptoms have on their lives. Incrementally, they become more adept at identifying and dealing with the unhelpful emotional responses that have been causing them problems, and at replacing these unhelpful emotions with more useful ones. They learn to talk about and make sense of what has happened in a way that allows them to consign it to the past and to move on with their lives in a healthy manner. They also learn how to protect themselves as they move on.
With TF-CBT, the goal is always to enable the patient to stop treatment as soon as they are ready. This pragmatic approach gives them the techniques they need to self-heal and to leave therapy when the time comes. However, patients know that they can always return for a “refresher” course of therapy if the need arises at a future point.

About our Workshop
Dilek is running a workshop on integrating TF-CBT into practice for psychotherapists and those working in related disciplines who plan to enhance their knowledge of TF-CBT and integrate it into their work, particularly with patients dealing with trauma and related issues. The workshop focuses on the essential knowledge and skills participants will require to practice this therapeutic method effectively. Participants will hone their skills in the areas of assessing and understanding trauma-related conditions and the therapeutic approaches involved with them.
Witha hands-on approach, the workshop is conveniently held in London and provides an in-depth, interactive learning environment for anyone who wants to know more about this hugely important approach to psychological treatment and therapy. The workshop assumes good general knowledge of the field of psychology. It is ideal for both recent graduates and established practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge of TF-CBT in the context of treating trauma. This includes candidates who are seeking accreditation in this area and those who have some knowledge of the field and wish to learn more. Ample use will be made of case studies and other learning tools.
Among the PTSD therapeutic techniques you will learn on the workshop are the following:
- how to do reliving
- how to do cognitive restructuring
- how to revisit the site of the trauma with the client
- how to offer additional CBT strategies for any remaining symptoms
- how to manage endings
-
Components of the Workshop
On the workshop, you will learn the three phases of TF-CBT. These are as follows:
-
Phase One – Stabilisation
Therapists will learn how to guide their clients through TF-CBT and help them to understand the nature of trauma and healing and to develop the skills they need, including relaxation skills and mindfulness, to promote meaningful healing and development. They will learn how to give their patients a sense of hope and to reassure them that, while it may take some time, with support they will be able to return to a high quality of life. Therapists will learn how to work with their patients to acquire techniques and strategies to modulate and regulate their own emotional states—to problem-solve, manage anger, and so on—and to develop cognitive processing skills that will help them to replace difficult thoughts and feelings with more useful, adaptive ones.
-
Phase Two – Trauma Narrative
Therapists will learn how to help their patients to talk about their trauma and how, over time, it will gradually become easier for them to talk about traumatic events that have taken place. Incrementally, with their therapists’ support, patients can become more adept at discussing their experiences in a narrative way, with reference to how they felt at the time of the trauma and how they feel now.
-
Phase Three – Integration / Consolidation
Therapists will learn how to help their patients consolidate the lessons they have learned, how to continue to build on them, and how to prepare themselves emotionally and practically for the future. Patients will need to be prepared to deal with reminders of the trauma that they may encounter in their daily lives and will gradually learn how to deal with potential triggers in their environment. Therapists will also assist them in learning how to protect themselves in the future and to minimise the risk of further trauma.
In all three phases, useful tools such as thought records will be explored.
-
Future Workshops
Future workshops will examine TF-CBT’s application in treating a range of anxiety-related disorders, exploring both the theoretical background of TF-CBT and its practical application in a variety of clinical settings.
