Why are blood tests important in mental health?
Blood tests are designed to measure the levels of hormones, vitamins, minerals, and markers for certain medical conditions, and can provide valuable information about a person’s physical health. In doing so, a blood test can help to diagnose certain medical conditions that may contribute to mental health issues. For example, a blood test can check levels of hormones, vitamins, and minerals that are important for proper brain function and identify imbalances or deficiencies that may be affecting mood or behaviour. Additionally, blood tests can detect markers for conditions such as anemia, infection, or autoimmune diseases, which can also impact mental well-being. Blood tests can be a useful tool in developing an effective treatment plan for mental health by having a comprehensive understanding of a person’s physical health.
Note: blood tests cannot diagnose mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia. While they can provide important information about a person’s physical health, they cannot measure the intricacies of the brain that are involved in mental health conditions.

What kind of blood tests do we offer?
We offer a variety of blood tests via finger pricks or blood draws. A blood draw involves taking a sample of blood from a vein using a needle and syringe (if you have a needle phobia, we can help with this too!). This method is typically used to collect a larger amount of blood for more comprehensive laboratory testing. A finger prick, on the other hand, involves using a small lancet to puncture the skin and collect a drop of blood from the fingertip, which is both more cost and time efficient.

What tests do I require for an ADHD assessment?
We require a blood test and ECG test as part of our ADHD diagnostic process, if you are seeking medication as a route for treatment. Our reasoning for this is due to the potential serious or unpleasant side effects of ADHD medication, therefore it is important to have a complete and accurate picture of one’s health before a prescription is written.

Where do the tests take place?
A blood test can be performed either in the comfort of your own home or in one of our partner’s clinics. If you opt for the former, a nurse can visit you and perform the test on site. This option is particularly convenient for individuals who are unable to leave their homes or have mobility issues. Alternatively, you can visit a clinic near you where medical staff can perform the test efficiently and accurately.
