What Is Vaginismus?
Vaginismus is the older term for what is now called genito pelvic pain/penetration disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition ( DSM-5 ). It is characterized by the involuntary tightening or contracting of a woman’s pelvic muscles in anticipation of sexual activity or any form of penetration. Consequently, engaging in certain sexual activities, inserting tampons, or undergoing gynecological examinations can cause intense pain, leading to various psychological challenges such as depression, lower self-confidence, feelings of isolation, and a strain in one’s relationship.
The stigma surrounding sexual dysfunction is still very prominent today, causing many women to believe they are alone in their struggle with this condition. However, vaginismus is more prevalent than commonly assumed, affecting an estimated 5-17% of women.
