Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Issues
Great strides have been made in our society towards more equality for LGBT citizens, but this is still a world in which anyone perceived of as “different” can have a very hard time, and discrimination and stereotyping are still real problems.
Whatever your age, if you are struggling with issues around sexual and gender identity, you’ll know how complicated it can all be. For some people, knowing that their orientation is likely to be perceived as shameful or disappointing by their family and community is very hard; more so in some ethnic groups and families than others. Some may struggle with the disconnect between the way they had always though their life would be and the reality.
While being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is not a disorder, dealing with the many practical and emotional difficulties inherent in being different in an often intolerant word can lead to a range of difficulties. You might feel lonely, isolated, and even develop problems such as depression, anxiety, stress and all the associated physical and emotional issues that come as part of the package.
By working with a psychotherapist, you can explore the origins of any negative or difficult emotions you have around your sexuality and/or gender identity. You can discuss and examine your relationships with the important people in your life, and figure out how these relationships can grow and flourish within the context of your sexual and gender identity. We can use therapies such as counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy or psychodynamic approaches to identify and understand any painful or difficult emotions you might be experiencing around your sexual and/or gender identity, and to learn how to replace those difficult emotions with more positive ones.
