Questions To Ask When Choosing A New Therapist

By Private Therapy Clinic

choosing a new therapistAs a psychologist, it’ll come as no surprise that I thoroughly believe that therapy can go a long way towards helping you with your problems. Whether it’s coming to terms with a loss, working through relationship issues or accepting a big change in your life, a therapist can help you to handle situations emotionally and mentally. Therapists tend to specialise in one form of therapy and each will use different techniques. So, when it comes to choosing a new therapist it’s important to find one that works well for you. Here are some of the questions to ask when choosing a new therapist; they will help you to work out if they are the right professional for what you need.

What Experience Do You Have With The Type Of Problem I’m Experiencing?

If a therapist has some experience with the type of problem you are faced with, it’ll be an indication that they have dealt with similar patients before. Though no two patients are the same, that therapist is likely to have a wealth of knowledge and skill that could be of benefit to you.

What Therapy Techniques Do You Use For People Like Me?

There are a lot of different types of therapy and therapists will opt for some techniques over others, depending on what they feel works best. Always try to get an idea of what their approach will be, so you know what to expect.

What Is Your Success Rate?

In short, you want a therapist who has a good success rate with helping patients like you. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Do You Lead The Sessions Or Do I?

Therapy sessions can generally be split into two types, those led by the therapist and those led by you. The type of therapy you’re seeking will come down to personal preference, but it’s important to choose a therapist that is on the same page.

What Will I Need To Do In Between Sessions?

Some therapists will want you to complete activities and others prefer to keep things inside the the session. What you choose will come down to your own preference and whether you want someone to set you day to day goals.

Do You Offer Phone Sessions?

If you’re really struggling with an issue or you think you’d benefit from help in between face to face sessions, find out if the therapist offers phone sessions. Many do and they can be beneficial.
